The Ruby Hill neighborhood lies in Southwest Denver. It is home to a he 83-acre park by the same name, bordered by West Florida Avenue to the North, South Quivas Street and South Raritan Street to the West, West Jewell Avenue to the South, and the Burlington Northern Railroad to the East. In winter, sledders flocked to the large hill, rising 150 feet, for long rides in powdery snow. In summer, people of all ages marveled at the abundant wildflowers growing there and the splendid 360-degree hilltop view.
It is because of this popular winter activity that the Ruby Hill Rail Yard was established in 2007 as the country's first free urban terrain park based in a city. The experimental program attracted approximately 3,000 youth and adults, and instantly became a nationwide model for numerous cities and ski resort collaborations. The second year saw participation grow to over 6,000, which the city used to quantify Ruby Hill Rail Yard as an annual park.
